We have a paid tier, and we use Stripe for that. For full disclosure, one of the founders of Stripe is one of our angel investors, but we chose Stripe because it was the best option, and has been good. It’s really easy to integrate with Stripe, and they have lots of nice options, like recurring plans and subscriptions. They also have a decent dashboard that allows you to see everything like customers, payments, and invoices. One thing that hasn’t worked well is when a customer add or removes a user from their plan. We tell Stripe to update the subscription “quantity”, or number of users, but the invoices generated by Stripe when you do this can be confusing. If you have 3 people and add 1, you’ll get line items on your invoice that say “Unused time on 3x credit” and “Remaining time on 4x credit”. The dashboard can also be a bit clinical. There are lots of add-ons and 3rd party apps that sit on top, like Baremetrics, that can provide helpful metrics, but it would be nice if that were built in. I’m confident we can get what we need from 3rd parties, if not Stripe itself, though. I have never had a need to go to their customer service, which is a plus, but on the rare times when I’ve seen people complain publicly, Stripe always gives a good response, so I expect their customer support to be good.

Stripe, especially from the point of view of a developer, is really great. It is extremely developer-friendly. For example, getting a checkout up and running requires very little code, and anything you want to do against their API is straightforward. We also use Stripe Connect, which allows our customers to have their own Stripe account, linked to ours. This allows us to issue charges on our customer’s behalf. It all works extremely well. Prior to using Stripe Connect, we had to deal with all disputes or refund issues, since Golf Genius would show up on the statement, instead of the customer’s name. We had been using Braintree, but we switched to Stripe because its integrations are super-slick and it offers a great user experience for the customer. Stripe has done a great job of branding and differentiating itself; it’s very sexy for the developer community, and there are little usability functions in the consumer workflow that make it a nice tool. However, to me it’s just a commodity and there are some aspects I’m not thrilled about. I don’t think implementation has been dramatically easier than Braintree, nor the backend administration of processing refunds and transactions. It’s also missing some basic functionality; with Braintree and Paychex, which we had used before, you would receive a daily settlement email with your bookings, refunds and net sales for the day. Stripe doesn’t do that, so I have to be in the app tracking our daily totals much more closely, or use a third-party app (Control, which works on top of Stripe) to get that information. I would also strongly recommend that you negotiate Stripe’s fees. In the fine print, we realized we had been overpaying, and renegotiated our rates.
